Nicholas Snow and PromoHomo.TV® are excited to help increase the buzz about Desert Open Studios 2024. There will be more than 150 artists participating in the 4th edition of Desert Open Studios running from Friday, January 26 through to Sunday, January 28, this year. And there are at least 6 artists who are gay. But as most will tell you, they are an artist who just happens to be gay.
“I do not consider my gayness when I paint. I don’t even think about it,” says Alberto Garcia Uria (@chasingmymagic on IG) who shows and works at the Sammy Zelcer Gallery (#34 on the DOS map) in the Perez Art District. “Being gay may be part of my identity but it doesn’t define me as an artist.”
Also in the Perez Art District are abstract artist Konrad Carter (@konradcarterart on IG), and his gallery partner George Byron (@georgepbyronart on IG).
“My urban series reflects the essence and energy of diverse and unique urban environments,” Carter says, “aiming to capture the multicolored textures, sights, sounds, chaos, and dreams within the urban experience, designed to strike your imagination.”
Both artists will be opening their studio and gallery in the Perez Art District (#34 on the DOS map) for all three days of Desert Open Studios, from 11 am to 4pm – but also on the Friday night is the monthly Last Friday Art Walk, and they will be extending the hours until 7pm.
Roberto Amaral (@fuego_amaral on IG) is an abstract expressionist artist who creates modern contemporary acrylic works on canvas. He displays his eclectic collection of paintings in all sizes, styles and color schemes at his home studio and gallery in Rancho Mirage, #31 on the DOS map. “I identify as being gay, because that’s who I am,” says Amaral when asked how his sexuality influences his art.
Kevin Nierman (@kevinnierman on IG) works in glazed ceramics, and will display his work and open his studio at Negocio Arts, #61 on the DOS map. “I don’t think my sexuality has influenced my work at all,” he said recently, “because all my work is abstract with no imagery.” He calls his process “complicated and unpredictable”, as anyone who has seen his vessels can attest.
Ernesto Ramirez (@ernestoramirez2005 on IG) describes his work as fun, bizarre and colorful. “I try to represent my Mexican heritage in most of my pieces,” he says. Ernesto’s work will be on display at the newly opened KEE Gallery in the Backstreet Art District, #46 on the DOS map.
Interested art patrons can download the handbook and map from the website, or pick up a printed map at any one of the participating artists’ studios and plan their self-guided tour.
WHAT: Desert Open Studios is celebrating its fourth year! Desert Open Studios offers an annual free self-guided art tour across the Coachella Valley. The tour is a unique way for the public to connect with more than 150 area artists, to observe their processes, purchase artwork, and explore spaces usually not open to outsiders.

WHO: More than 150 artists are participating this year. The artists span all across the Coachella Valley from Indio to Desert Hot Springs. The artists work in a number of styles, formats, and materials. There are painters, sculptors, ceramicists, photographers, artists who work in glass and wood, jewelry makers – creators of all kinds. From abstract to realism, reclamation and plein air, multimedia and digital – discover our creative communities.
WHERE: The tour covers the Coachella Valley uniting the east and west art scenes. From Indio and Pinyon Pines in the east to Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs in the west, visitors will discover artists everywhere! There are several artists hubs, communities, and art centers where groups of artists have come together to create micro creative communities. Hubs include Backstreet Arts District and Via Negocio in Palm Springs, Perez Road in Cathedral City, and The College of the Desert arts faculty hub in Palm Desert. Visitors can use printed and online maps to design a customized adventure focused on the areas they want to visit and types of art they are interested in.
