About the National Center for LGBTQ Rights

The National Center for LGBTQ Rights (NCLR) is a national legal organization that advances the civil and human rights of LGBTQ people and their families through precedent-setting litigation, legislation, policy advocacy, and public education.

Founded in 1977 by attorney Donna Hitchens as the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the organization has spent decades shaping the legal landscape for LGBTQ equality. In 2025, the organization adopted the name National Center for LGBTQ Rights to reflect its longstanding commitment to serving the full LGBTQ community.

NCLR litigates cases in trial and appellate courts, advocates for equitable public policies, provides free legal assistance to LGBTQ people and their legal advocates, and conducts community education on LGBTQ issues. Its work spans a wide range of issue areas including asylum and immigration, employment, family law, healthcare, housing, hate crimes, transgender rights, youth advocacy, elder law, and rural community access.

The organization also launched some of the nation’s first dedicated LGBTQ legal initiatives, including projects focused on immigration, transgender rights, youth, and elders. NCLR continues to lead efforts to end conversion therapy through the nationally recognized Born Perfect campaign.
