Journalist Garrett Glaser’s new memoir, FAIRYBOY challenges all LGBTQIA+ journalists to live and work “100% out of the closet,” to bring all of themselves to the newsroom each day and to capitalize on the outsider status they endured growing up.
Glaser, who worked for ABC News, CBS News, NBC News and Entertainment Tonight over a 30-year career, says, “It’s crucial for all news people to bring their life experience to the work they do each day.”
FAIRYBOY is an inside look at the hidden world of gay New York before the Stonewall riots of June, 1969, seen through the eyes of an adventurous teenager. The author went on to become the nation’s first local TV news correspondent to come out of the closet while on the air (NBC Los Angeles, 12/5/1994).
In FAIRYBOY, journalist Garrett Glaser examines the formative and sometimes wild experiences of his youth and later life against the tumultuous events of mid-twentieth century American gay liberation.
Glaser worked on the memoir for more than a decade. The book’s thirty chapters cover his childhood, teenage years and career, all the way to retirement in 2007 after a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Throughout his life, Glaser says he found it impossible to hide who he was as a gay man.
“Sexual orientation is such a basic part of our lives, I cannot imagine what it would have been like to deny that important piece of my identity. I knew from a very young age that I would have to live “out and honest.” What’s more, I believe being out actually helped my career.”
