More Than 1,100 Marilyns Set Sights on Guinness World Record in Palm Springs

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — A sea of platinum blonde wigs, white dresses, red lipstick, and Hollywood glamour is expected to fill downtown Palm Springs today as more than 1,100 participants gather for Marilyn 100, an ambitious attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of Marilyn Monroe look-alikes ever assembled.

The event celebrates what would have been Marilyn Monroe’s 100th birthday while honoring the enduring relationship between the iconic actress and the desert city that became one of her favorite retreats. For Palm Springs, Marilyn is more than a Hollywood legend. She remains one of the community’s most recognizable cultural symbols, representing the glamour, optimism, and star power that helped define the city’s image around the world.

Presented by Palm Springs Pride, Marilyn 100 combines entertainment, community celebration, tourism, and history into one unforgettable event. Participants have traveled from across California and beyond to take part in what could become a record-setting moment.

To qualify for the Guinness World Records attempt, participants must meet specific costume requirements, including Marilyn’s signature white dress, a platinum blonde wig, bright red lipstick, sunglasses, and a martini glass. Organizers say Guinness officials recently clarified that all participants must wear a visible shade of red lipstick during the official count.

The logistics behind the event are substantial. Participants are being organized into 11 separate zones where volunteers verify costumes, manage registration, and distribute numbered wristbands. Each participant must scan a QR code upon arrival to ensure accurate documentation for Guinness officials.

Once registered and verified, participants are escorted into a designated control area where they must remain during the official certification period. Guinness rules require every participant to be visible and accounted for during a continuous five-minute counting window.

The world record attempt represents far more than a costume gathering. It is also a celebration of Palm Springs itself, a city whose identity has long been intertwined with Hollywood history. During the mid-20th century, Palm Springs became a playground for movie stars seeking sunshine, privacy, and relaxation away from Los Angeles. Marilyn Monroe was among the celebrities who helped cement the city’s reputation as a glamorous desert oasis.

Her legacy remains visible throughout Palm Springs today, from the city’s towering Marilyn Monroe statue to the stories, photographs, and cultural references that continue to draw visitors from around the world.

Palm Springs Pride’s involvement adds another meaningful dimension to the celebration. While best known for producing one of California’s most vibrant Pride festivals, the organization also supports year-round cultural, civic, and community events that bring residents and visitors together. Marilyn 100 reflects that mission by creating an experience that is playful, inclusive, highly visible, and uniquely Palm Springs.

Following the official Guinness certification attempt, participants and spectators will continue the festivities with a free Cher’d tribute concert featuring a live band. Organizers hope the evening will serve not only as a successful record attempt but also as a joyful community celebration.

Whether or not the Guinness record is officially broken, thousands of people dressed as one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons will create a visual spectacle unlike anything Palm Springs has seen before. For a city built on sunshine, style, inclusion, and star power, Marilyn 100 may prove to be one of the most fitting celebrations in its history.
