I sit down with Drew Sebastian, appearing in the current PRISM Theatre production of Making Porn, the outrageous stage comedy by Ronnie Larsen.
Known professionally as Drew Sebastian — and born Andrew Karl Clements — Drew brings humor, candor, charisma, and lived experience to our conversation about performance, reinvention, queer storytelling, and stepping into a play with this much history behind it.
Making Porn is set in San Francisco in the early 1980s and follows six people whose lives intersect inside the gay adult film industry. Beneath the bawdy laughs and outrageous situations, the play explores ambition, desire, identity, chosen family, show business, and the complicated ways people survive — and reinvent themselves — in a world that often wants to define them first.
The play also holds a distinctive place in queer theater history. Since its 1995 world premiere, Making Porn has become one of Ronnie Larsen’s signature works, enjoying a landmark Off-Broadway run and productions in major cities and internationally. At a time when queer stories were still fighting for mainstream stage space, the play put gay sexuality, adult entertainment, and LGBTQ+ humor unapologetically at center stage — with plenty of cheek, but also with undeniable cultural impact.
